Nancy Mahaney, PhD

Before joining The Chesapeake Center, Nancy Mahaney, PhD worked for over twenty five years in a successful private neuropsychology practice in Sacramento, CA, where she served a wide range of individuals affected by ADHD, developmental learning disorders, traumatic brain injury, autism spectrum disorder, OCD, anxiety, and depression. She is particularly skilled in detecting how one’s brain works and identifying the conditions that can help optimize each client’s functioning.
Because ADHD, learning disorders, and associated anxiety and mood disorders potentially influence performance in every facet of life, treatment should be equally multi-faceted. She uses client-focused, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) strategies designed to define problems from the client’s perspective and which yield specific, real-life examples of how an individual might “get stuck”. She helps clients identify and use their strengths to free themselves from barriers that are holding them back. Barriers can be difficulties in attention and learning and/or in the form of negative thoughts and feelings about self and others that in turn block happiness. Therefore, Dr. Mahaney also treats a variety of issues involving psychological stress, self-esteem, and the quality of interpersonal relationships.
Education and Training:
Dr. Mahaney earned a master’s degree in clinical psychology from Loyola University and a doctorate in human development from the University of Maryland. She received postdoctoral training in neuropsychology at Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital in Baltimore, where, in 1984 she established the first neuropsychology service.
