Children don’t come with instruction manuals. And even the best parenting advice may not be useful for the often challenging children that are brought to Chesapeake. Our children are often struggling with impulsivity, low frustration tolerance, emotional overreactions, forgetfulness and procrastination – all of which can be very challenging for their parents. At Chesapeake, we provide parent coaching – both on an individual and group basis – to teach parents the most effective tools to become more effective parents to their challenging children.
We offer ADHD-friendly parent training classes and family therapy to help parents become constructive problem-solvers, to help them build a positive, supportive relationship with their child, and to help them reduce the number of parent-child conflicts and emotional explosions on the part of their child.
Our goal is to teach parents how to create an ADHD-friendly home and family — children with ADHD have the opportunity to be successful and to reach their potential when their home and school environments are designed to be ADHD-friendly. We often refer children with ADHD and their parents to ADHD-coaches and professional organizers affiliated with the center. These professionals can help to create ADHD-friendly daily habits, develop more efficient, effective ways to get homework done and create pleasant, organized spaces — bedroom, playroom and study space — that will help your child feel more organized and focused.
