Relationship conflict and strife frequently result from undiagnosed or untreated ADHD and the lack of understanding of its neurobiology. Couple therapy that is specifically tailored to this diagnosis allows ADHD patterns to be addressed in the context in which they often predominate: family life. This workshop will examine the key components of effective ADHD couple therapy: psychoeducation, medication, problem-solving strategies for specific ADHD symptoms, roles of each partner, rebuilding trust, communication and intimacy.

Colette de Marneffe, Ph.D. has been in clinical practice for almost twenty years, working with adults, adolescents and children in outpatient, inpatient and private practice settings. Currently on staff at Chesapeake ADHD Center of Maryland, she specializes in treating adults with ADHD in individual and couple therapy.

At the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to

1. Identify key symptoms and behavioral patterns associated with adult ADHD.

2. Describe three frequently observed relationship patterns in couples in which one partner has ADHD.

3. Formulate an appropriate treatment plan, including individual and couple goals.

4. Delineate techniques for effective communication for emotionally reactive couples.

5. Describe strategies for specific conflicts related to household and parenting responsibilities, work/home balance, household organization, and finances.
