Testing and Assessment Services

Chesapeake Diagnostic Center

Testing is the first step toward meeting the needs that bring you or your child to our diagnostic center. Following testing, we work with you to follow through on the recommendations that are developed through our assessment.

We will guide you every step of the way to unlock your or your child’s potential.

We are available for school visits, college advising, graduate and professional school advising, workplace consultations, counseling, coaching, collaboration with other mental health professionals, and tutor recommendations.

Our goal is to be with you every step of the way, using our test results to help you build the future that you are seeking for your child or for yourself. We offer:

  • Consultations — we offer 90-minute consultations that include review of records, clinical interview and completion of questionnaires.
  • Neuropsychological Testing to assess executive functioning issues and cognitive functioning
  • Psychoeducational Testing to assess attentional and learning issues.
  • Psychological Testing to explore coexisting conditions such as anxiety, depression, interpersonal/social issues and other psychological issues that often accompany ADHD and LD.
  • Career Assessments — both for mid-career adults and for adolescents and young adults, to help them understand their strengths and interests as they prepare to select college majors or choose a career direction.

What to expect during your assessment

An assessment typically takes place over four sessions including:

  • Initial diagnostic interview
  • Two testing sessions of 3-4 hours each
  • A third testing session, as needed. In some cases additional testing, not ordinarily included in our test battery, is administered. We will discuss this with you, give you an estimate of the additional time involved to administer, score and interpret additional tests and the additional cost that will be involved. Additional charges may be incurred for in-depth psychological testing or career testing.

For clients coming from out of town, we make every attempt to accommodate your schedule, compressing the process into as little as 1½ consecutive days and offering a feedback session via phone or Skype if you are not able to return in person.

Preparing for your assessment

Previous records

Please send copies (no originals, please!) of all previous assessment records and relevant academic, workplace and/or medical records in advance of the scheduled initial interview. This allows the psychologist has time to review them before your initial appointment. If you prefer, you may bring records to the initial appointment; however, this may result in a less productive intake interview. Ideally, we prefer to review records in advance. Please bring copies of all records instead of your originals, so that there will be no risk of damaging or losing original documents.

Intake forms

Please complete and return all of the forms that we email you prior to the initial interview. These interactive forms can be completed online and returned to us. The more information you can provide for us on these forms, the more productive our initial interview with you will be.

Following testing, you will receive

  • A full written report, including test scores
  • A careful explanation of our test results and what they mean
  • A detailed discussion of our recommendations

Because we are not only an assessment center, but also a treatment center, you can work with us in a variety of ways following testing depending upon our findings and recommendations. Follow-up support can include:

  • Solution-focused counseling to guide clients in creating work, school and home environments that will build habits and support optimal functioning
  • Career counseling
  • Referral to and collaboration with physicians that may be prescribing medications based on test findings
  • ADHD/Executive Functioning Coaching
  • Professional Organizing
  • School visits
  • Consultations with disability support providers to assist them in implementing our recommendations
  • Consultations with employers regarding our findings and recommendations
