Testing

The Center offers psycho-educational and neuropsychological assessments of children, adolescents, and adults. An assessment typically takes place over several sessions including an initial diagnostic interview two testing sessions of 3-4 hours each, followed by a feedback interview to interpret test

results and to make recommendations based on those results.

Our assessments include what we believe to be the best tests available in order to understand an individual's attention and learning. Psychological screening is a routine part of our assessment protocol. However, more in-depth psychological assessment, including projective testing, is not part of our standard assessment. When emotional/psychological issues are a focus of the evaluation, an additional fee will be charged for projective testing or other psychological testing, based on time spent to administer, score and interpret them.

Records can be mailed or faxed in advance so that the psychologist can have time to review them in advance of your initial appointment. Or, if you prefer, you may bring records to the initial appointment. Please bring copies of records, not originals, so that there will be no risk of damaging or losing original documents. Records that may be helpful to us include medical records, school records, and prior test reports.

College, Graduate, and Professional students

For college, graduate and professional students our initial clinical interview is also typically followed by psychological testing in order to carefully assess issues related to attention, memory or learning that may be impacting academic performance.

Career-focused testing is not a routine part of our adult evaluations, but is often very helpful when evaluating college students who have not yet made a career choice, or when evaluating adults who are considering a job or career change.  Such testing can help guide the student to make career decisions that are a good match for strengths, weaknesses, interests, and abilities.

Testing

Our diagnostic testing consists of cognitive and academic testing. The initial clinical interview assists us in evaluating whether additional tests should be administered to provide us with more information about specific concerns. Our approach to testing is that of a Hypothesis testing model. The specific tests to be administered are decided on a case by case basis depending upon the particular concerns being addressed.

We use a hypothesis-based approach to diagnostic testing, which means that we develop hypotheses based on our clinical interview, but also based on initial test responses, which guide us in selecting additional instruments that will help us explore our hypotheses about what issues are preventing you from functioning at your best.

We begin our assessments using measurements or tests that provide us with an overall sense of cognitive strengths and weaknesses as well as measures of academic achievement.  From there we administer whatever psychological or neuropsychological tests we feel will be most useful in determining the nature of your particular challenges.

All of our assessments include psychological screening.  When more extensive psychological testing is called for there will be an additional charge based on an hourly fee for the time required for test administration, scoring and interpretation. Any such additional charges will be discussed with you in advance.
