Ways that we help children with ADHD and their parents

family on the beach

Whether a child has already been diagnosed with ADHD, or a parent suspect that their child may have ADHD, such parents typically have many concerns, asking themselves questions such as:

  • Will my child be able to become a successful student?
  • If my child takes stimulant medication, will she have to take it for the rest of her life?
  • What can I do to have a calmer relationship with my child?
  • How can I create a smoother functioning home environment?

At the Chesapeake Center our goal is to help parents and children learn to manage the challenges of ADHD that occur at home, at school, and with friends. While we focus on problem-solving, we also focus on the very real strengths and talents of each child.

Our goal is to help children with ADHD be successful at every age. Often, much of our work is done directly with parents. While we work individually with children around certain issues, we find that in many cases we can be more helpful by working with parents and educators to build the supports and environment in which the child can succeed. We offer a range of interventions depending upon the needs of the child and his or her family including:

  • Individual parent counseling and guidance to help them to better understand the needs of their child, help them monitor their child’s response to medication, and help parents to develop more ADHD-friendly, effective parenting techniques.
  • Individual child counseling — When appropriate, we work with children individually to help them cope with self-esteem issues, family conflict, social skills issues, and to generally help the child develop a positive, constructive attitude toward ADHD-related challenges.
  • Understanding Psychological Test Results — We work with parents to ensure that they understand the results of psychological testing of their child.
  • Support for follow-through on testing recommendations we make based on our psychological testing.
  • Attending School meetings — We are available to accompany parents to I.E.P. meetings (Individualized Educational Plan) and 504 Plan to discuss the results of our testing and collaborate with teachers, counselors, school psychologists and other school personnel to develop accommodations that will help your child succeed in school.
  • Technical supports and educational software packages — we make recommendations to parents — explaining to them exactly how these supports can help their child become a more confident, successful student.
  • ADHD-friendly parent training classes to help parents become constructive problem-solvers, to help them build a positive, supportive relationship with their child, and to help them reduce the number of parent-child conflicts and emotional explosions on the part of their child.
  • Guiding parents to create an ADHD-friendly home and family life — children with ADHD have the opportunity to be successful and to reach their potential when their home and school environments are designed to be ADHD-friendly.
  • ADHD Coaching — Our ADHD-coaches can help to create ADHD-friendly daily habits, develop more efficient, effective ways to get homework done.
