What is Coaching?
AD/HD coaching consists of a partnership between client and coach that assists clients to live more effective and satisfying lives through encouragement, new learning, goal identification, accountability, and forward action.
AD/HD Coaching can supplement therapy or stand alone as a support service to an individual managing life with AD/HD. AD/HD coaching is not therapy.
For young clients, I work with the family to set up a supportive environment including clear routines and structure that can encourage success for the child and ease for the family.
For clients in middle school, I combine working with the child and the family to achieve the best results.
Teens, college students, and adults with AD/HD work directly with me on challenges they face managing school, work, personal health and wellness, and relationships.
I also coach parents of teens and young adults in re-defining their parenting role(s) as their child is getting older.
What does coaching accomplish?
Coaching can accomplish as much or as little as the client wants to achieve. Here is a sampling of the types of challenges I assist individuals with:
- Understanding AD/HD and its impact on a one's own life
- Becoming aware of one's own learning style and understanding one's own learning challenges
- Discovering and appreciating one's own strengths
- Addressing challenges related to executive functioning
- Identifying and implementing personal approaches to time-management and organization
- Identifying strategies to manage with short-term memory challenges
- Using motivational strategies that work
- Implementing actions to forward growth
- Providing accountability to support desired action steps
- Finding strategies for success with goal setting and follow-through
- Improving self-awareness and self-esteem
- Developing self-advocacy skills
- Exploring other avenues of individual interest
I also coach parents of challenging children on finding balance at home, and I coach and consult with families interested in homeschooling their children on how to get started or how to balance homeschooling and a parent's own needs. I have an adopted child diagnosed with attachment disorder and can work with families facing this challenge, in conjunction with a therapist, on exploring resources and setting up helpful structures and strategies at home.
Structure of Coaching
- Complimentary 30-minute phone information session with student (and parents if client is young, a middle school or a high school student)
- Two-hour intake session (in person when possible, by phone if necessary)
- 30 minute meetings once/week, typically via telephone are most common
- Complimentary email/text contact between sessions
- Additional meetings with parent(s) as needed can be arranged
- Monthly contracts are most typical, with payment made at the beginning of the month
- Note: some individuals may need a different arrangement, such as shorter more frequent sessions, or only periodic "tune up" sessions. These can be arranged individually
